"Clouds Through Your Window"

November 21, 2024 - January 12, 2025

Royse Contemporary is pleased to present "Clouds through your window" the much anticipated new collection and solo exhibition of Cam DeCaussin. He utilizes oil paint to imbue his compositions with intricate detail, moments of light and color, enigmatic energy, and an ambiguous mystery within his subjects.

Entering into this year’s monsoon season coincided with a personal period of weary tumult–unacknowledged realizations, looming fears, and an unrelenting cycle of buried guilt and grief that was hidden by distractions and busyness for the artist. “The storm outside echoes the storm within, each cloud a reflection of my internal dialogue,” he affirms.

“I find a certain ennui in the cyclical nature in processing and releasing these restrained emotions and I carry their weight—unnecessary burdens, preoccupation, and a quiet shame—while waiting for permission and an excuse to downpour, says DeCaussin.” His artwork captures these emotions explored through ephemeral moments within neighborhoods during the hours between dawn and dusk, revealing brief moments of life within. Existing within the delicate balance of observation and voyeurism, each painting brings the viewer into a multifaceted narrative unfolding before them.

Evoking themes of solace, sadness, and contemplation, he has created masterful artworks that emphasizes the beauty of the Arizona skyline, midcentury architecture and the desert. “Clouds through your window is a continuation of the embracement of allowing these emotions and thoughts to enter: to process, to sit with, to struggle, to question, and to accept all the discomfort they bring,” explains DeCaussin.

Cam DeCaussin is a highly skilled oil painter with a keen eye for detail and an incredible ability to capture the energy and mystery within his subjects. His artwork has a feel of voyeurism, but at the same time they are personal and relatable. His paintings feature some of Phoenix’s most distinct midcentury homes, with people coming or going in the liminal space between.  His work serves as a reminder that we are not the sole being, but rather we exist in many different stories, if only for a few brief seconds. Influenced by the iconic works of painter Edward Hopper and photographer Gregory Crewdson.

Formally trained in the arts receiving his Bachelors of Fine Art in Illustration from Grand Valley State University and Masters of Fine Art in Painting and Drawing from Arizona State University. His captivating pieces have graced numerous prestigious exhibitions, including the Arizona Biennial at the Tucson Museum of Art and shows at notable venues such as: Manifest Gallery in Cincinnati, Ohio; Renmin University of China in Beijing; Torrance Art Museum in Torrance, California; RAE Space for Contemporary Art in Berlin, Germany, Mesa Contemporary Museum of Art; Chandler Center for the Arts Gallery; and the Eric Fischl Gallery. His work can be found in many private collections across the United States.
